To meet the needs of a Fortune 500 manufacturing company, a regional
accounting firm needed an efficient way to assign use tax attributes to hundreds
of thousands of invoice records and to calculate the resulting tax obligation.
Working closely with the firm's tax experts, I developed STEP, a 300 MB
"micro data warehouse" implemented in Microsoft Access. The STEP
system enables tax consultants to import downloaded accounting system records,
query those records on multiple dimensions, and assign complex combinations of
tax attributes in two modes:
- a detailed single-record view that lets the user drill-down into
underlying data relationships and
- a powerful batch operation that allows the user to update tens, hundreds,
or even thousands of records at a time.
Using STEP, the accounting firm processed a backlog of over $500 million in
purchases during an initial project and continues to use the system to handle
on-going activity for its client.
