1 Ultra Quick-Start The “manual” is required reading for some pieces of software, but Anthem Tax Workbench is not supposed to be one of them. AWB has a narrow functional scope, and it’s meant to slip into place easily and become useful quickly. A 300-page user’s guide does not fit into the picture. Besides, in real life someone eventually needs, or tries, to run the software without the manual, usually sooner rather than later. Better to plan for this fact up front.
While this guide is a meant to be an informative supplement, I want the new AWB user, someone with average knowledge of Excel, to be able to get results in 20 minutes without it. Accordingly, I’ve tried to make the purpose of each AWB button, menu item, and option either self-evident or “reasonably-discoverable,” which is a fancy way to say you can figure out what it does with a modest amount of experimentation.
Therefore, if you’re the adventurous type or you’re not “into” manuals, the Ultra Quick-Start is for you. You can fire up AWB immediately by following these steps:
1. Load the AWB program:
If Excel is already running, use File-Open to open AWB.xla. o If Excel is not running, double-click on AWB.xla in Windows Explorer. Excel should start and then open AWB.xla.
2. Activate the AWB program:
o Find the AWB menu on the Excel menu bar and select Activate.
3. Open an AWB model:
o Use File-Open to open the AWB model as you would any Excel workbook. Note the default extension for an AWB model is awb, instead of xls.
4. Explore the AWB menus and toolbars:
o Activate and print forms using the Navigator and other features.
5. Save the AWB model if you wish to keep the changes you make to it:
o Use File-Save to save the AWB model as you would any Excel workbook.
6. Deactivate AWB:
o Select Deactivate from the AWB menu on the Excel menu bar. Note you can deactivate AWB at any time, even when an AWB model is open.
