User Interface Defined

User Interface is a collective term that refers to the components of a system that let the user of the system understand and control the system's behavior.  The user interface of software is most often implemented through the screen and keyboard.  The screen shows you what's going on and gives you menus, buttons, and other widgets to click as a way to control the software.  The keyboard gives you a way to enter data and an alternative to clicking on widgets.  (There are other types of  user interfaces.  For example, speech processing and synthesis involve neither the screen nor the keyboard.)
